Updated Acute Care PNP Practice Research

The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) is excited to announce that the latest practice research on acute care pediatric nurse practitioners (AC PNPs) has been published in the Journal of Pediatric Health Care: Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner: The 2018 Practice Analysis

Based on PNCB's latest AC PNP job task analysis study, the article provides an overview of the following characteristics of providers practicing in this important role:

  • Practice and tasks
  • Demographics
  • Professional development

This is the fourth practice analysis of the AC PNP role that demonstrates continuous evolution in clinical practice, educational preparation, and subspecialty practice distribution. The goal of this routine, required study was to update the current tasks, knowledge, and skills needed to practice as a competent Acute Care Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC) and to ensure validity for the content outline for the CPNP-AC examination. This initiative was also part of the requirement to ensure compliance with reaccreditation standards for certification examinations.

The PNCB is grateful to the authors of this manuscript: PNCB Chair Michael Maymi, DNP, APRN, CPNP-AC, CCRN, CNE; Past PNCB Board of Directors Members Maureen Madden, DNP, RN, CPNP-AC, FCCM and Karin Reuter-Rice, PhD, CPNP-AC, FCCM, FAAN; and PNCB staff member Caroline Bauer, MSN, RN, CPNP-PC/AC.
